Tax Assistance

The Retiree Activities Office offers year-round Federal income tax assistance to military retirees, active duty members and their families. The RAO is located between the MacDill Commissary and Base Exchange.

Walk-in tax service is available on Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 pm. Tax service on Fridays will be by appointment only beginning at 10 a.m. with the last appointment at 2 p.m.

Sponsored by the MacDill Staff Judge Advocate, this service is offered free of charge and is operated under the supervision of the RAO. Tax assistance volunteers are trained under the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program and are certified by the IRS for performance at a level commensurate with most retirees' incomes.
 
UPDATE: FEBRUARY TAX ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE!

Option 1.Tax assistance will be provided again this coming tax season in the RAO beginning the first week of February. This service is offered free of charge to retirees, spouses, widows/widowers, and active duty families of all branches of service.

The RAO uses computer software to prepare tax returns and provides electronic filing, wherein refunds can be expected within approximately two weeks.
 
The tax assistance program is sponsored by the Staff Judge Advocate and is operated under the supervision of the RAO. Tax preparers are trained under the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program and are certified by the IRS for performance at a level commensurate with most retirees' incomes.

During the upcoming tax season, appointments may be scheduled starting Jan. 14, 2013, either in person or by calling the RAO tax office at (813) 828-0248. Walk-in service will be provided five days per week starting Feb. 4, 2013. This service is available on a first-come-first-served basis during operating hours, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please keep in mind, between 9 to 11 a.m., active duty personnel in uniform are given walk-in priority over other walk-in customers. If the RAO did not prepare your prior year's tax return, you should bring a copy of the return you filed for that year.

Option 2. Additional Federal tax return preparation is available through the Airman and Family Readiness satellite office located at 710 Oakfield Dr, Suite 153, Brandon FL 

This service is provided through IRS/VITA certified volunteers and is free for anyone holding a military ID card (Actively Serving, Retired, Reserves, Guard) Appointments are required, you may call to schedule an appointment beginning Jan 15. We ask that you have received all of your necessary documents required for your return (W-2, 1099, interest earning, etc) before calling to schedule. Appointments will begin Feb 1.
