MACDILL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. --
The 6th Air Mobility Wing, MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, has been selected as Air Mobility Command’s nominee for the 2019 Air Force Association Verne Orr Award.
Established in honor of former Secretary of the Air Force Verne Orr, the award recognizes an Air Force unit that makes the most effective use of its human resources. The accomplishments are mission-oriented focusing on how the unit can excel in its use of people to achieve its full potential and accomplish the mission.
“I am extremely proud of the professionalism of the military and civilian Airmen who accomplish our mission and to represent the command just validates our team’s incredible efforts and accomplishments in 2018,” said Col. Stephen Snelson, 6th AMW commander. “Our Airmen are the best innovators who work together to get the job done every day. They amaze me with their ingenuity, dedication to the mission and service to our Air Force and the nation.”
The wing’s mission is to provide unmatched air refueling, executive airlift and installation and mission support. The wing is organized into four groups and one agency: Operations, Maintenance, Mission Support, Medical, and the Wing Staff Agency. Team MacDill includes 33 tenant units from all branches of service to include U.S. Central Command, U.S. Special Operations Command and the 927th Air Refueling Wing.
The presence of these two unified commands and other mission teammates creates a unique multi-service community at MacDill, with all branches of service represented. Although MacDill is an Air Force base, it is also home to many Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen.
The wing was recognized as the best at the Department of Defense and Air Force levels ten times, highlighted by the 2018 General Spencer Innovation Award for the development of a KC-135 Stratotanker inspection and repair process that saved 84 maintenance man-hours per aircraft, fleet-wide. Additionally, the installation was one of only four to receive the 2018 Great American Defense Community Award, leveraging partnerships to increase innovation success.
The 2019 Verne Orr Award will be presented by the Air Force Association during the 2019 Air and Space Conference and Technology Exposition this September at the National Harbor in Maryland.
