In 1861, John La Mountain, a freelance civilian rose to 1,400 feet in a hot air balloon and informed Major General Benjamin Butler that Confederate strength around Hampton, VA was weaker than originally thought. This was the first recorded successful balloon reconnaissance mission for the Army. (Historical photo)
