Volunteers step up to improve MacDill’s shoreline
Volunteers install oyster reef balls along the shoreline at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, Dec. 2, 2021. MacDill teamed up with Tampa Bay Watch and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to help reduce erosion and improve coastal resiliency, provide an attachment surface for oysters to grow on which will filter the water, and provide habitat for numerous species of fish and wildlife. Volunteers loaded oyster reef balls, each weighing between 150 to 200 pounds, off of trailers and placed them into the water surrounding the base.
