Meet the new 290th JCSS commander Published July 23, 2012 By Staff 6th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs MACDILL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Lt. Col. Van Aulen recently took command of the 290th Joint Communications Support Squadron. He took time out to introduce himself to the MacDill community and answered a few questions from the Thunderbolt. Thunderbolt: What do you expect of the Airmen under your command? Aulen: My expectation is we will maintain a commitment to strive for excellence in accomplishing the mission in the most effective and efficient manner possible. Of course, I also expect to learn a great deal from each of them because they are experts in their respective fields. From there, it will be my responsibility to try and continue to position them for future growth and success. Thunderbolt: Who are your favorite leaders and role models and why? Aulen: For leaders, I would include George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill and Ronald Reagan for the roles they played during critical junctures in history. They displayed a high level of perseverance and commitment to the cause during incredibly difficult times. The fact is every leader faces difficult times; it is how one acts during those times that defines the true nature of the type of leader they are. As far as role models, I must say my father. He was simply a great man for both his family and community, always putting others above himself. Thunderbolt: What does it mean to you to be a new commander? Aulen: It is quite humbling. It is also an exceptional honor to be afforded the opportunity to serve in this capacity. As a commander, I think it is incredibly important to be a great team captain and facilitator for the outstanding men and women under my charge. Without a doubt, true command success can only be achieved through the combined efforts of every person in the organization. Thunderbolt: When you hold your first commander's call what is the first thing you are going to tell your Airmen? Aulen: My intent is to advise them that while I am there to lead the organization, I truly exist to support them and ensure they are best positioned to continue their successes as exceptional Airmen. I believe that is the greatest role you fill when you serve as a commander. Of course you are there to get the mission done, but you are also there to take care of the men and women with whom you serve. Thunderbolt: What are your thoughts about MacDill and living in Tampa? Aulen: As a native son of Florida, I am excited about the opportunity to establish my newest residence within such a vibrant and growing community. The Tampa area offers so much; I am hopeful my family and I are able to take advantage of it all. MacDill is a beautiful Air Force installation, and it continues to play a significant role in the region's rich history. Thunderbolt: Is there anything else you would like to add? Aulen: The last thing I would add is how eager I am to physically transition to the area, engage the challenges associated with the organization and its mission, and begin working with the great people of the 290th! I am truly blessed to have this opportunity and look forward to successful times with the entire team.
