6th AMW legal office an indespensible resource at MacDill Published Aug. 19, 2010 MACDILL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- During a recent tour of the legal office, Col. Lenny Richoux, 6th Air Mobility Wing commander, was briefed on MacDill's legal assistance program; the nationally recognized program served more than 5,400 clients in 2010. The MacDill Legal Office provides full spectrum legal advice to the 6th Air Mobility Wing commander, four group commanders, squadron commanders, the director of staff and wing staff agencies. The legal office is composed of two divisions, military justice and general law. The military justice division provides advice to commanders, first sergeants and supervisors on courts-martial, Article 15 non-judicial punishments, and other adverse actions including administrative separations, reprimands and promotion actions to ensure good order and discipline. Attorneys from the base legal office prosecute military accused before general and special courts-martial. The general law division is responsible for legal advice on ethics, contracts, labor and employment law, environmental law, and other administrative law issues. Perhaps the most important function of the general law division is to ensure our legal assistance program meets the legal readiness needs of deploying service members. The legal assistance program also provides advice on personal civil issues to active duty military members, retirees and their eligible dependents. In 2008, MacDill's legal assistance program was awarded the American Bar Association, Legal Assistance to Military Personnel (LAMP) Distinguished Service Award. The LAMP award recognizes units who have set the bar for military legal assistance by pushing themselves and their practices in extraordinary ways. The MacDill legal provides same-day will services on Thursday mornings to clients from all branches of military service, retirees, and their dependents; 875 clients took advantage of this service in 2010.
