Commander's PT builds unit pride Published March 22, 2013 By Airman 1st Class Vernon L. Fowler Jr. 6th Air Mobility Wing public affairs MACDILL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Preparation is key when it comes to achieving cohesiveness and mission readiness within a unit, and attempting to move forward without it can increase vulnerability put the mission at risk. The 2nd Joint Communications Squadron conducted a "Commander's PT" recently to build esprit de corps and physical fitness. This physical training session was designed to test the service member's abilities, both physical and mental, while providing limited information on the challenges. The day began with formation, accountability and a safety briefing at 5:45 a.m. Each member was equipped with their utility uniform, running shoes, body armor, reflective belt, gloves and had the option of carrying a source of water. Everyone was then divided into pre-determined four-man teams and placed on a 6.5-mile course which they began to navigate at 6 a.m. The course consisted of nine events, each of which required the participation of all the members of each team. Approximately three hours were given for all the teams to complete the course. All the teams were placed in a situation that tested each member physically and mentally and required teams to overcome every obstacle as one cohesive unit. "Tough and realistic physical training done at the team level and in healthy competition with others is a great way to build esprit de corps, not only in the team but in the overall squadron," said Lt. Col. Jeff Worthington, 2nd Joint Communications Squadron commander. "It makes much more effective and confident teams." "I felt the session was a true bonding experience for the squadron because it provided a common objective for everyone to accomplish," ," said Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Yshameka N. Mack, 2nd JCS.
