Tinker Teacher wins national contest Published Aug. 28, 2009 By Airman 1st Class Katherine Holt 6th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs MacDill AFB, Fla. -- Jordan Whitcomb, Tinker Elementary 3rd grade teacher, will start this school year in style. Miss Whitcomb was the grand prize winner, for Tampa, for Jones New York in the classroom's 2009 Back to School, Back to Style national contest, with support from Macy's and Adopt-A-Classroom. Of the 17,000 entries there were seven grand prize winners. "Jordan received 32 nominations from the people whose lives she touches daily," said Marie Manning, Oglivy Public Relations. "Her nominations were the most out of all contestants in all 7 markets." When she heard the news, Jordan couldn't believe it. "I was honestly surprised by the number of nominations I received," said Jordan. "Of course everyone who knew told me they would get online and nominate me, but I didn't expect to have that many." When you walk into her classroom, there is no doubt why she has the love of her students and their parents. Her classroom is filled with 16 live animals, rugs, pillows and books all purchased with her own money. Her commitment and dedication to her students and classroom has paid off. Jordan received a shopping spree at Macy's in Westshore Mall in Tampa, Fl. She will also receive money to further furnish her classroom and will receive money to present to Mrs. Cheryl Tyo, Tinker Elementary Principal, to put toward the school. Jordan is scheduled for a trip to New York and a fashion shoot with JNY Wednesday, Aug. 25. She will fly to New York on Tuesday, Aug. 24 and fly back after the photo shoot to reveal her new look in the classroom on Aug. 26. "I have always been a T-shirt and jeans kind of girl," said Jordan, when asked about her old look. "I am excited to show off my new look to my family, friends, co-workers and students." Jordan will be featured online at www. jnyintheclassroom.com and www.jny.com.
