Pet Fest fun for four- and two-legged Published May 15, 2009 By Airman 1st Class Katherine Holt 6th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs MacDill AFB, Fla. -- Where can you find a talent show, a costume contest and a peanut butter eating contest requiring the participants to have four legs? All these things and more were found at MacDill AFB's "Woofs and Whisker's Pet Fest" at the Base Veterinary Clinic May 8. More than 30 pets and their owners came out to participate in the festivities. "This was the first Pet Fest we have had since 2005," said Spc. Jeannie Hettler, 6th Medical Group animal care specialist. The Pet Fest was the grand finale for National Pet Week. The festival, which was attended mostly by dogs, held several contests giving pets and owners take-home prizes. There was a fetching contest, a peanut butter eating contest, a costume contest and a talent show. Each event had a winner. A counting canine took home the first place prize for the talent show. "A prize that wasn't on the agenda was given for participation," said Specialist Hettler. "There was an enthusiastic dog that participated in all the events, so he took home a prize." Talent shows and contests weren't the only activities on Friday. The 6th Security Forces Squadron brought their military working dogs and put on a demo for all spectators, owners and pets alike. Students from Tinker Elementary entered into a contest of their own. In honor of National Pet Week, students at Tinker entered into a coloring contest and a creative writing contest. Awards will be given to the winners of these contests later this week. "All in all I think the event went well," said Specialist Hettler. Planning for next year's Pet Fest is under way. Specialist Hettler stated that as long as she is here, there will be a Pet Fest.
