MacDill celebrates Old Glory, provides example of Flag respect Published June 18, 2007 By Senior Airman Patrice Clarke Thunderbolt staff writer MACDILL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- MacDill celebrated the Flag Resolution of 1777 during a Flag Day ceremony held at Memorial Park June 14. Members from the 6th Medical Group participated in the official flag raising ceremony. Wing leadership was also in attendance. It was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. Communities throughout the nation celebrated Flag Day in various ways, but it wasn't until President Truman signed an act of Congress designating June 14 of each year as National Flag Day. Even though Flag Day is not an official Federal holiday, the flag provides Americans a history of both triumph and struggle. 'Old Glory' means a lot for many citizens, especially those serving in the military. Team MacDill members should remember policies and procedures when showing respect for the flag and the National Anthem as outlined in Air Force Pamphlet 36-2241, Professional Development Guide: - All personnel outside and in uniform must face the flag and render a salute during the raising and lowering of the flag. Upon hearing the first note of the National Anthem and "To the Colors," personnel should stand, face the flag and render a salute. If the flag is not visible turn toward the direction of the music and render a salute to be held until the last note of the music is played. - All vehicles in motion should come to a stop at the first note of the music and the occupants should sit quietly until the music ends. - Individuals in civilian clothes should face the flag (or the sound of the music if the flag is not visible) and stand at attention with the right hand placed over the heart. - Military members in the official physical fitness uniform should stop at the first note of the music and salute.
