Military children get a month of their own in April Published April 19, 2007 By Nick Stubbs 6th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs MACDILL AFB, Fla -- The service and sacrifice of military members is recognized by most as the foundation of freedom and critical to our future as a sovereign nation. But what about the sacrifices made by the children of military servicemembers? These "small" sacrifices number in the millions every year, as military children endure the deployments of parents and living with the worry associated with having a dad or mom in harm's way. To show they are not forgotten, April is dedicated to especially to them. The Month of the Military Child is a big event for the Child Development Center where many military youngsters spend part of their day on base. Numerous events mark the month designed to ensure military children know someone is thinking of them and has a deep appreciation for what it is like having military parents, said Gail Mouse, director of the CDC. The special month of celebration dates back to 1986, she said, and was initiated by then-Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger. "Every year Air Force child development programs typically plan a variety of special events and activities that focus on children," said Mrs. Mouse. We do things to try to build program spirit and encourage all to participate." Flower planting, T-shirt decorating, a parade and a family barbecue have been held thus far to celebrate the month. Through the remainder of the month, events such as crazy hat day, a reading day and an art auction are scheduled to take place. A special emphasis is being put toward the artistic creations of the children. Their creations will be on display at the CDC Monday through Friday. All art will be auctioned, with bidding closing out at noon Friday, April 27. All proceeds will go the CDC advisory board to fund projects for the children.
