U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Rafael Perea assumed command of the 927th Security Forces Squadron during an assumption of command ceremony, here, July 9.

As the commander, Perea takes on leadership of more than 90 defenders, including directing, planning and conducting operational training activities to satisfy wing and wartime readiness. Also under his command is the combat arms training and maintenance, which supports all 927th Air Refueling Wing personnel.

The presiding officer of the ceremony, Col. Alan Tornay, 927th Mission Support Group commander, spoke about Perea after the presentation of the colors and the ceremony's invocation.

“Perea has an incredible resume and performance in everything he’s done,” said Tornay.

“He was known to be a great leader and the go-to guy by his peers.”

Before arriving at MacDill, Perea commanded the 387th Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron at Ali Al Salem Air Base, Kuwait. He has served as a commander in various fields throughout his career.

“Every opportunity I’ve had between the military and my civilian career has led me where I’ve always wanted to be,” said Perea. “I am very proud to be a defender and that’s why I am looking forward to giving back.”

Parea served as an enlisted law enforcement specialist right out of basic training and a police officer in his civilian role. Having excelled in various leadership roles, Perea returns to his roots serving as the 927th SFS commander.
