Six military depends stationed at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, were awarded scholarships to be used toward educational expenses, June 17, 2015.

Every year The Michaels Organization administers educational scholarship programs to military dependents that reside in the base housing communities owned or managed by the organization. Since 2008, MacDill AFB dependents have been eligible.

"It feels like a blessing to have received this scholarship," said Alexa Schuler. "I know there were a lot of applicants so to be one that was selected is fantastic."

The scholarship recipients were awarded a grant ranging from $1,000 to $4,000. The grant can be used toward educational expenses at any accredited college, university or vocational school in the nation.

"This scholarship will be a massive help as I begin my journey through college," said Andre Briere.

Briere will not be attending just any college. He got accepted into the Air Force Academy, following in his father's footsteps, Col. Andre Briere, 6th Air Mobility Wing vice commander. The scholarship will be used to pay for uniforms, books and any other school-related expenses that accrue.

Schuler expressed, "I'm nervous, however, being a child of a military member and having to move every few years has prepared me for my transition from a high school student to college student."

Schuler will be attending the University of Central Florida pursuing a degree in political science with aspirations to become a criminal defensive attorney.

The application process requires two letters of recommendation, an essay or art or music portfolio, transcripts including grade point average, and acceptance letters into a college.

If you are a military dependent and wish to start or further your education there are hundreds of scholarship opportunities available.
