On Jan. 20, 2015, the men and women of the 6th Air Mobility Wing paused from their every day jobs for the wing Safety Day at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida.

"With the theme of 'Back to Basics', my guidance to all units was to remember what it was like to be a brand new Airman straight out of technical school or a new Lieutenant straight from accessions, and focus on what they learned during that time in their careers," said Col. Daniel Tulley, 6th AMW commander.

In addition to the story Tulley shared at the mandatory wing commander brief about a tragic and preventable death of an Airman he knew at a previous base, he also gave each group commander the flexibility to focus on the safety specifics to their individual unit mission.

"Going in, our focus was on face-to-face communication," said Tulley.  "We focused on 100% accountability for all members, and to take a pause from our daily routines and focus on the most basic functions of our job."

During the safety day, the Medical Group focused on patient safety, the Maintenance Group and Operations Group focused on KC-135 Stratotanker cargo door mishaps, and due to the diverse job skills, the Mission Support group focused on sharing experiences and concerns that could help other career fields on and off duty.

"Overall this was a very beneficial day for the 6th Air Mobility Wing," said Tulley "At the end of the day we had engaging conversations and positive feedback from our Airmen that it was refreshing to step back and refocus their efforts on the basics of their jobs."
