While the fight against domestic violence is ongoing, MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, and the Air Force as a whole, continues to search for and create innovative ways to combat this problem, as well as other forms of assaults.

On October 30, 2014, MacDill hosted the "Strike Out Domestic Violence" bowling event at the MacDill Lanes and Family Fun center.

People were given the opportunity to participate in recreational bowling to support the fight against domestic violence.

As an incentive, the first 40 individuals to sign up were rewarded free admission and two free games of bowling.

"The aim was to have fun," said Andrea Bowen, Family Advocacy Outreach manager. "While also providing an avenue to provide information, resource and referrals to individuals who may not be informed of the community resources and helping agencies on and off base affecting domestic violence."

Participants were also able to take brochures containing information and free treats from the Family Advocacy table present at the event.

"We wanted to give people something to make them more comfortable about discussing domestic violence," said Bowen.

Additionally, throughout the month of October personnel were encouraged by Family Advocacy to donate items to the local domestic violence shelter for victims of domestic violence.

"The MacDill community has been able to step up and provide a need," said Bowen. "We donated multiple clothing items, food and personal toiletry items for victims seeking a way out of an unhealthy relationship; the impact has been tremendous."
