Members of the 6th Force Support Squadron hosted a Welcome Back Party in celebration of the return of our annual military "snowbirds" to the family campground Dec. 13, 2013 at MacDill Air Force Base, Fla.

The FAMCAMP is a camp site where retirees from up North come to stay during the winter months, to escape the cold weather back home. There are over 440 sites and the campers stay in tents, recreational vehicles, and campers for approximately six months.

Out of 800 people, an average of 200 attend the welcome back celebration each year. The majority of the residents are settled in by December, therefore, this serves as the official "kick-off" of the season.

"I have been involved for three years, and it is nice to have the entire community together," stated Lulani Lobdell, 6th FSS activities program coordinator. "They all get here at different times, but everyone is here by mid-December for this event."

The event consisted of a potluck lunch, live music, sponsorship tables, and a holiday decoration prize giveaway. Opening remarks were made by Col. Scott DeThomas, 6th Air Mobility Wing commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Douglas Earle, 6th Maintenance Group superintendent, followed by the blessing of the food.

"I am honored to have the ability to take part in this event," expressed DeThomas. "It is a privilege to be able to serve after you, and we appreciate what you have done for Team MacDill."

For 10 years, MacDill has supported this event to show appreciation for the campers and their contributions through financial influences and volunteer hours. This event introduces leadership and provides a social gathering for the new campers to get to know each other. For the old campers, they are able to catch up with old friends, which allow them to foster a community.

MacDill's FAMCAMP is not only a place to escape from the cold weather, but for many retirees a home away from home.

"The event is considered a great big social event," explained Caroline Rice, 6 FSS outdoor recreation director. "It is also a great platform for the leadership to become acquainted with the campers."
