Team MacDill hosted a 9/11 Memorial 5K Run Sept. 9, 2016 at the Short Fitness Center at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida.

Approximately 180 personnel participated in the run dedicated to remembering the lives lost in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

“There was a possibility that some of the participants were, or knew someone who was affected during the terrorist attacks,” said Senior Airman Austen Hively, a fitness specialist with the 6th Force Support Squadron (FSS).

All participants of the 9/11 Memorial 5K Run received a bandana, while the top three male and female fastest runners received workout related prizes.

“We gave out American flag bandanas,” said Tech. Sgt. Adrienne Meadows, a fitness center operations manager assigned to the 6th FSS. “They were for the runners to have as a reminder that we’ve bounced back from 9/11 and to show the U.S. colors.”

Unique to this run was, the 9/11 Memorial 5K Run hosted a National Anthem singer and the presentation of the colors by the MacDill Base Honor Guard.

“The event was to let the runners show their patriotism, to show that even through difficult times our nation can adapt and overcome,” said Hively. “We will never forget what happened that day, and we’ll maintain our resiliency.”
