It's been an honor to serve with you; team standouts

On July 27, 2012, my time as commander of the 6th Air Mobility Wing and MacDill's installation commander will come to a close. I never really believed the time would pass so quickly, but sadly it has. My wife Michele and our three children have enjoyed and relished the opportunity to serve with you at MacDill.

I want to thank you for your hard work and dedication. Two years ago I asked you to put mission readiness at the top of your priorities. You did this by meeting every single combatant commander tasking, whether a deployment or an air refueling or DV passenger airlift mission.

I asked you to build the installation into a base we are proud to call ours -- one that represents the fine tradition of our Air Force always taking care of people first, our most important asset. You did this by ensuring the base was spotless every single day. You also helped to ensure our base remained safe for all who live and work here.

I asked you to reach out to the local community and to represent our Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard well. You did this as we grew our civic leader outreach program to more than 1,000 members.

As I look back, you hit a home run every day. The 6th passed every inspection we were given. We put on a fabulous Air Fest for the people of Tampa. We transformed our services on base to serve the best on-base housing community in the entire Department of Defense. We built new headquarters facilities for CENTCOM, JCSE, SOCCENT and others. We resolved a large part of the persistent parking problem on base. The list goes on and on. As I move on to the next opportunity to serve, please know that I remain your number one fan.

Every week I've had the opportunity to recognize unsung heroes in my commentary, and this week is no different. This week I'm thrilled to recognize Staff Sgt. Maurtell Colbert and Airman 1st Class Gregory Richardson for going above and beyond outside the gates of MacDill. We had a local community leader call up to say what great ambassadors of MacDill Colbert and Richardson are. Thank you both!

For the rest of you, you are the finest Air Mobility Wing on the face of the planet and I am proud to serve with you.
