Periodic Inspection at MacDill

Airman 1st Class Xavier Owens (bottom left) and Senior Airman Patrick Earl, 6th Maintenance Squadron Aircraft Electricians twist wires together to finish the installation of an overheat fire detector located in engine four of a KC135 from Andrews AFB, Va. here, Dec. 11 in Hangar two. The KC135 has been here a week for a periodic inspection after being grounded for two months at Andrews AFB, Va. due to shortage of personnel. The aircraft was granted a one time flight to MacDill in order to have a periodic inspection conducted faster, saving time and using manpower efficiently, all part of the Air Force Smart Operations for the 21st Century. A KC135 receive two periodic inspections every five years. This inspection was completed in five days compared to three weeks with teamwork of 24 Airmen, 16 active duty from MacDill, four Reserve from the 927th Air Refueling Wing and four Airmen from Andrews.
