Gold Star Families Memorial
“…nearly 400,000 veterans call [the Tampa] area home. The Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force don’t order them to retire here, they choose it…because it feels like home,” Army Gen. Richard D. Clarke, commander, U.S. Special Operations Command told Tampa Mayor Jane Castor and the audience during his remarks at a Gold Star Families memorial dedication ceremony in downtown Tampa’s MacDill Park on Nov. 7, 2020. The Gold Star Families Memorial is part of retired Marine Corps Chief Warrant Officer 4 and World War II Medal of Honor recipient Hershel “Woody” Williams’ effort to build a Gold Star Memorial in every state to honor the sacrifice of families who have lost a member in service to the nation.
