A volunteer from MacDill Air Force Base, ties a biodegradable shell bag during the MacDill Living Shoreline Project at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, Jan. 29, 2026. The project brings together base personnel and community partners to repurpose donated oyster shells into protective shoreline infrastructure. Since its establishment in 2003, the living shoreline has engaged more than 8,000 volunteers, including military members, community organizations and local schoolchildren, demonstrating the lasting impact of collaborative environmental stewardship.
