Thomas Palermo, 6th Maintenance Squadron honorary commander, sits in the cockpit of a T-1 Jayhawk at the 99th Flying Training Squadron JBSA-Randolph, Texas, Sept. 27, 2023. The squadron was formed during World War II as the first flying unit for African Americans known as the Tuskegee Airmen.
