Thomas Palermo, 6th Maintenance Squadron honorary commander, sits in the cockpit of a T-1 Jayhawk at the 99th Flying Training Squadron JBSA-Randolph, Texas, Sept. 27, 2023. The squadron was formed during World War II as the first flying unit for African Americans known as the Tuskegee Airmen. The squadron now prepares prospective flight instructors to teach undergraduate pilots and combat systems officers at various bases in the Air Education and Training Command.
